Abstract

This article is intended to determine a new style in the 21st century abstract painting and distinguish particular features of the creation and perception of associative and metaphorical color compositions. The article focuses on the main stages of formation and development of non-figurative art in painting, along with the comparative review of associative and metaphorical color compositions and optical artworks, which are based on the particularity of visual perception. The comparative review of these two styles shows us the significant difference. Optical artworks usually do not contain any art image because their focus is on the special effects of delusive perception. Optical art intentionally destroys the integrity of reality perception, causing mental disbalance in viewers. While associative and metaphorical color compositions create the image cohesion, using the laws of the Universe.

An associative art image is created due to the natural interaction of two energy flow, namely, the flow of an object color and the background color flow.

The color could become lighter or darker in the process of its development. The change of color to black or white semantically means its death, a return to the origins. If we talk about white color it means a transition to eternal existence, and if we talk about black color it means eternal non-existence. According to the concept of an artwork, the color shift to achromatic can be used to create an art image in associative and metaphorical color compositions. The conducted research shows us some patterns used in creating associative and metaphorical color compositions as specific works of non-figurative art, in particular the universal law of harmony and principles of discreteness, continuity, polarity, rhythm, golden ratio, hierarchy, unity and integrity.

All these laws and principles are aimed to create a distinctive associative art image in non-figurative painting. Associative and metaphorical color compositions can be successfully used different design areas and exist as specific works of art. Thus, associative and metaphorical painting could be considered as a specific style of non-figurative art.
