THE PRINCIPLES OF CONSTRUCTING ASSOCIATIVESHAPED COLOR COMPOSITIONS

Abstract

The article discusses the principles and patterns of creating associatively-shaped compositions as separate works of non-figurative art, or elements of the design of the interior, environment, clothing, stage. The associative-shaped color compositions can be called music of color since they are built according to the similar laws of harmony and conformity. Like a melody is woven from individual sounds using just a few notes, a figurative composition can be created from the main spectral colors without resorting to a form. In doing so, the principle of discreteness, implemented by applying a modular grid, is observed, along with the principle of continuity, as the same spectral color is not interrupted within the composition. Interactions of vertical and horizontal rhythms of the modular grid in the composition are organized by the principle of polarity, as well as interactions of two different spectral colors that unfold in the certain opposing rhythms. Thus, one color is a background for the manifestation of another. The constant change in the lightness of each color causes a regular color movement in the composition since the lightness changes in accordance with the laid down rhythm. It is the way the principle of rhythm is applied, leading the composition to unity and integrity. The center of the composition is determined by the principle of the “Golden Ratio” as a maximum contrast in terms of lightness, color tone, or saturation. For the volumetric and spatial solution of the composition, contrast reduction to the peripheral areas of the composition is built under the principle of hierarchy. In order to harmonize the color solution, a third spectral color, the so-called dominant, is introduced into the composition. It combines two opposing colors by adding a modular grid to each element. Consequently, all the principles involved in the composition production is aimed to create an associative art image as the embodiment of the principle of unity and integrity.
