Abstract

Research in the field of the culture of creating books for children is a significant and integral factor in the development of modern book graphics as a whole. Ukrainian masters of book graphics of the second half of the 20th century laid down important artistic and stylistic features of the complex formation design of children's books. In particular, they preferred a substantive and plot-thematic combination of font design with illustrative ones. Research methodology consists in the application of general scientific methods (analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, unity of historical and logical) and art studies methods (comparative, typological, descriptive). This article is research of the peculiarities of the artistic stylization of the external design of the Ukrainian children's book of the second half of the 20th century as an example of the useful experience of the creative activity of modern illustrators. The practice of illustrating and designing a book, both for children and for adults, is extremely complex and diverse. During this period, special attention was paid to the synthesis of all elements of the book, from the artistic interpretation of the text to the architecture, rhythmic structure of the book, compositional systems and illustrations. And in this case, the illustration is not investigated as an independent problem, it is included in the complex unity of text, design and graphics as one of the constituent parts of the whole. Thus, special attention should be paid to the complex external design of children's books as a leading element in the semantic and visual perception of the book. The main difficulty in the work of an illustrator lies in the peculiarities of the child's psyche, related to the perception of the imaginary world and the real world. It is quite difficult for an artist to solve the problem of combining the logic of a literary plot and pictorial space with a flight of fantasy, which is so appreciated by children. At the same time, it is impossible to consider illustrations for children in isolation from the process of development of fine art, its theory and history. That is why the work of masters of the book art of Ukraine of the second half of the 20th century, who worked with the design of literature for children, is an extremely fruitful object of research.
