Features of the concertmaster`s work with a pop vocalist
Abstract
The article explores the specifics of professional interaction between a collaborative pianist and a pop vocalist as a distinct area of modern performance and pedagogical practice. The comprehensive analysis of the interaction between the pianist and the pop vocalist as a separate domain of collaborative performance, which significantly differs from classical vocal practice has been done. The article examines the main features of a pianist's work with a pop vocalist, including adaptation of the accompaniment for performance with a microphone, the need for improvisational flexibility, participation in the creation of a stage image, and artistic interpretation of the piece. Particular attention is paid to working on cover versions as a special form of creative partnership, where the pianist and vocalist act as co-creators of a renewed musical form. As a result of the study, methods for effective interaction between pop vocalists and collaborative pianists are formulated, and recommendations for improving the professional skills of pianists working in the pop genre are proposed. The article also outlines the main requirements for a pianist working with pop vocalists and identifies key skills and personal qualities that ensure effective collaboration. In the contemporary musical space, the role of the collaborative pianist is undergoing significant transformation due to the expansion of genre boundaries and the active integration of pop vocals into both performance and educational practices. The traditional academic model of accompaniment, where the pianist plays a primarily supportive role, no longer fully encompasses the scope of interaction within the pop genre. Instead, there is a growing need for a versatile specialist who combines the skills of an accompanist, arranger, improviser, and artistic co-creator. Despite increased scholarly attention to contemporary Ukrainian musical art, particularly in the pop domain, in recent decades, there is still a noticeable lack of academic research dedicated to the specificities of the collaborative pianist’s work with pop vocalists.
