Object theatre as a stage tendency of the performative turn in the art of puppetry
Abstract
The article is dedicated to research of the artistic phenomenon of the object theatre within the broader cultural context of the performative turn. In particular, the performative turn in stage art and its influence on the formation of the object theater is considered. Special attention is paid to highlighting the nature of the emergence of the object theater. The origin of object theater from the art of puppetry is clarified and the performance techniques used in object theater are characterized. The features of the development and characteristics of the concept of object theater are outlined, and its forms of integration into various types of stage and actionist art are considered. A theater-scientific analysis of European and Ukrainian object theater performances, as well as performances that use object theater as an expressive element, was carried out. The scientific works of Western European and American researchers of the object theater are analyzed. Object theater is conceptualized as the result of a transformation within the art of puppetry, shaped by the tendencies of the performative turn. It is proven that modern performative productions of the object theater belong to the aesthetics of the art of puppetry. The theoretical concepts such as the object “animation”, improvised puppet, animation theater are characterized and defined. Stage productions of dramatic theater with the integration of expressive means of puppet theater and object theater are considered. Based on the thesis of Graham Harman's object-oriented philosophy about the possibility of the existence of objects in an autonomous reality and Richard Allеn's “object-object” formula, which describes the interaction of an object with a performer without subjective influence, an attempt is made to provide different options for classifying action in various performative forms of the object theater. Within the framework of the study, the impact of metamodernism trends on the character of stage performative practices is considered.
